Typing Programs

For kids with learning difficulties I think that prepackaged games and e-learning modules (for example typing packages) is really good for a few reasons:

  • They are a highly engaging way of understanding the types of things computers can do
  • They provide an opportunity to practice mouse skills
  • They provides basic keyboarding skills
  • They provide an opportunity to learn the basics of navigating digital content eg back, forward
  • It can be a relaxing activity
Typing skills
  • I'm finding that a bit of typing practice and music at the beginning of the lesson is really relaxing.   I've been using the E-learning for Kids Computer Skills module.  The main problem is that the kids can't easily pick up where they have left off
  • TypeRacer this is pretty challenging text to type but you can compete against people all over the world.
  • Keybr is an online typing tutor.
  • TuxType is an open source typing program especially designed for kids.
  • Axis of Evil is a difficult game based game that would be good for teenage boys.
  • Kids Learn2Type this is an online program that also allows you as a teacher to monitor how the kids are going.

There are also a bunch of speed tests, you can probably search Google to grab them.  Although at this stage it seems less important that the student competes against targets rather than a typing speed.

Tracking a students progress is a valuable thing - both so you can report back on the success of the program and to give the student a bit of independence in completing tasks.  So my dilemma is do I get the students to access a cute, engaging online interactive like e-learning for kids and just monitor in the session, or get them logins for Learn2Type or maybe possibly download software like TuxType or a commercial learn to type program.

At this stage I think Learn2Type with an online login is probably the best bet.  It seems like every time you have to install software it's a hassle this way as long as the internet is working it will be fine.
