Staff Training Week 6: Sportsmanship video in iMovie

Student Activity

This week will be learning to use iMovie in more detail.  The students will take two weeks to take digital images of each other on the sports field.  Select appropriate music for a sports movie.

  1. Adding digital images of sporting moves to iMovie (we will use Boot Camp pictures)
  2. Adding music to iMovie (sporting theme eg Eye of The Tiger :) & sound effects)
  3. Add title slides to iMovie (actions & themes)
  4. If we have time - taking a video of yourself explaining what sportsmanship is

If we cover most of the activities in Week 7 we can use some of the time in Week 8 to watch video of sports people.

Staff Workshop Activities

  1. Watch iMovie overview movie
  2. Open iMovie
  3. Import images to iPhoto & edit as required
  4. Add images to slide show
  5. Add sound to slide show
  6. Add title slides to show
Remember you can use the iMovie Help as required.

Lastly the final training session will be conducted in week 9 on the 25/26th March.  We will discuss the final project which will run week 9/10/11.  These weeks we will basically continue to review the iLife suite and include a few little tips on making the most of all the applications as we go.

Please let me know ASAP what you would like your topic to be.  Communicating something they have already learnt in images would be great.  This could be something like getting pictures of machines and labelling them.  Making a movie of a class excursion.  Making a movie of fun jokes could be a good way of getting students engaged.  Creating a digital story based on accelerated literacy would also be an option.

If you would like you can write your answer as a comment at the end of this post.

Thanks
Chet

Lesson Plan Week 6: iPhoto +iMovie

We have been going really well with our multimedia creation at school - both teachers and students are having fun creating things.  This week I thought I might inject a bit of extra fun by giving them some funny photos to play with.  We might discuss a little bit about feelings or humour but generally this should just be about feeling good.

Lesson Plan

  1. Move shared 'Funny Photos' to iPhoto - teachers and aides to assist
  2. Edit images in iPhoto if desired
  3. Create a new project
  4. Create slide show in iMovie by dragging 10 photos you like into the frame

If there is time

  1. Move shared 'iMovie music' to iTunes
  2. Drag music to iMovie Project

Create Your Own Album Cover in 3 Minutes

ICT Activity

There is a really fun meme on Flickr where you create a CD cover by remixing media available on the web.   Find a random picture from Flickr, a random article title from Wikipedia and a random quote to create your art.  It is very interesting to see the quality of artwork created in all these different ways.   It is easy to contribute, it helps you learn about some of the different Web2.0 tools that are available and helps inspire creativity.

Doing something like this with students could be a good way of helping them get ideas for their own CD cover project while learning to use a variety of different information sources.

Copyright

One thing to watch out for is whether the artist who have posted the images on Flickr have agreed that you can create a new artwork or repost their photo without permission.  I was lucky the person whose photo I got had licensed it under Creative Commons.  I was unlucky because it was a 'no dirivetives' license which means you can't change the photo.  I left her a comment and she said 'no problem' so my album cover is legal :)

How to

  • You can use power point or word to put your alblum cover together
  • To download the picture from Flickr click 'all sizes', then hit 'download'
  • When you're finished you can take a picture or screen shot of your image to save it (mac how) (pc print scrn)
If you've never contributed to a meme start with this one , you learn a lot.  Share your results.  Ask for help if you need to - their is plenty available.[Read More]

Back to the blog

This is an exciting year for me and blogging.  Talking to many more teachers about blogs and also helping my mum setup her blog for the 2nd year.  We had a lot to think about:

Should we roll over the blog?
  • We decided not to because we wanted kids to see the full journey.  The professional blogs will continue but every new class will get their own.  This blog post by Sue Wyatt that helped us make the decision.
Which blogging platform?
  • Stu Hasic explains the different blogging services available to educators here.
  • Will we stay with Edublogs?  It's been a little bit of an adjustment but for me technically with the new supporter rules etc but the Edublogs community is still really a warm and fuzzy community to belong to and the kids understand that they are part of that community.

Student permission

  • Is this the blogging & internet permission form that everyone is using?  Stu Hasic provides more details about blogging in the classroom as well as an blogging permission form.

Still need convincing?

  • Here is a video I took with the kids last year explaining the benefits of blogging.

Scratch

Scratch is everything they said it would be and I love it. In about an hour I created about 10 different animations including a flying bird, throwing a basketball and two butterflies having a conversation.

Classroom uses:

  • Talking and listening - explaining what your characters will do, how you will make things move etc
  • Storyboard and creating narratives
  • Demonstrating science activities and concepts
  • Creating simple demonstrations
  • Making or playing games eg Archery Champion

Challenges:

  • The biggest challenge is working out some of the fiddly maths bits like how far an object should travel on the x&y

The resources are on the Macquarie ICT wiki. You can also learn more at the Learn Scratch website.

OLPC Orientation

Today was my first day trying out the One Laptop Per Child laptops.  Those little green and white ones with the airals that twist up.

  • It opens from the bottom
  • The applications are simple and very useful
  • I still can't work out how to insert a picture into a document
  • You connect to the internet via the Neighbourhood page - one of the first row of keys on the keyboard.  It can take multiple tries to connect to the internet.
  • It can surf the internet like a regular computer.
  • Video is ok.  The sound is pretty good but the actual video capture is not great.  Like skype but a little bit worse.

I think the best thing about them so far is that you can see this is the kind of computer that will get kids to work or to games they enjoy learning from rather than just playing with menus and trying to work out how to use the computer.

Activities we might start with:

  • Tux Maths
  • Tux Typing
  • Video/audio/images/text diary
At this stage it looks like we will be doing a very small trial of one class (our classes are 8 including teacher).  The first phase we really be getting into routines and and observing how the students interact.  We'll also be getting familarised ourselves.  More updates to come.  Thanks Pia for allowing me to have this opportunity.

Aussie Chix conference highlights

I had a great day yesterday at the Aussie Chix conference.  Short 15 minute talks on a variety of topics from writing code through to learning a bit about the One Laptop per Child program in Australia.  The format of the conference and the diversity of attendees really left me with lots of ideas.

Things I want to start doing as a result of the conference:

  • Use Scratch in the classroom including the website to play games created by kids
  • Make students aware of the questions behind their search terms
  • Consider using virtualisation to boot an application and an operating system at the same time, maybe something like gCompris
  • Use Wikipedia for Schools and think about getting a real life Wikipedian like Brianna Laugher to come and visit the school.
  • If my students can't afford a computer at home getting them one through the Computer Bank
  • Get my hands on one of the One Laptop Per Child computers to have a play with
