Sadly, the Northern Territory Government is going ahead with its flawed "first four hours in English" policy". This dismantles the bilingual education programmes in which children are taught for their first few years by teams of Indigenous teachers and English-speakers, so that they learn English and other content with the help of their mother tongue. The Northern Territory Government don't seem to have any real idea of how unworkable their new policy is in classrooms where children come to school not speaking English, and where the community language is not English. A paper on this is available on the AIATSIS website. Simpson, Jane, Caffery, Josephine, and McConvell, Patrick. 2009. Gaps in Australia's Indigenous Language Policy: Dismantling bilingual education in the Northern Territory. Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Discussion Paper 24. http://www.aiatsis.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/10703/Simpson_et_al_2009_DP_24.pdf.

Just found a new children's book "From Little Things Big Things Grow" adapted from the original song lyrics and illustrted by kids from Gurindji Country with Peter Hudson. Available online from one day hill http://www.onedayhill.com.au/. I purchased a copy from ABC shop. Excellent adaption. There are so many fabulous lyrics out there by Indigenous people from all over the nation.
