The 2009 Overcoming Indigenous Disadvantage Report shows little progress has been made in closing the gap for Indigenous people but provides the strongest argument yet for the need for a new way of working with Indigenous people, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner Tom Calma has said. This web site contains information about what DEEWR is doing to Close the Gap targets as well as outlining the programs, initiatives and services available to help improve the lives of Indigenous Australians. It also provides information for Indigenous Australians interested in working in the Department. There are sections of the site for Early Childhood, Schooling, Higher Education, Indigenous Skills, Indigenous Youth, Employment and Business, and Indigenous resources for each sector.
Agreement was reached at the COAG meeting of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and State and Territory leaders in Darwin, in new areas including education, food security and Internet access for remote Indigenous communities, and importantly on having more comprehensive data collection to monitor and measure progress. Keynote speakers at the Dreaming Festival, Professor Mick Dodson says to learn from each other, people need to start talking and not judge each other on cultural stereotypes. The Australian of the Year wants everyone of all backgrounds to take the positives of cultural celebrations like the Dreaming Festival into wider communities to work towards reconciliation. The 2009 Australian of the Year, Professor Mick Dodson, has told a national conference that the principles AusAID uses in delivering aid throughout the region should be applied to the delivery of assistance to Australia's indigenous communities. The Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness, which AusAID adheres to, is a 'good approach' because it relies on consultation, engagement and building partnerships. AusAID, 23 June 2009.

Traditional Maori and traditional Aboriginal knowledge have joined in Central Australia in a unique trans-Tasman exchange of ideas and experiences in bush foods and indigenous art. The project follows the highly successful 'Hands Across the Desert' venture, in which Aboriginal communities thousands of kilometres apart met to share knowledge and experiences in the bush foods business. The overrepresentation of Indigenous young people in the criminal justice system has been identified as one of Australia's most significant social problems. The Australian Human Rights Commission is running a competion to name the soon-to-be-established new national representative body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Entry is open to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples living in Australia and is limited to one entry per person. The competition closes on at 11.59pm on Friday, 26 June 2009. The Australian Government is committed to setting up a Healing Foundation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people which will support communities and individuals to address trauma and healing needs. Community workshops will be held across Australia from May to July 2009 to listen to community ideas for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Healing Foundation. The Indigenous Communications Program is an Australian Government initiative to help to improve telecommunications services in remote Indigenous communities. It will provide essential telephone services, basic public internet access facilities and computer training for many remote Indigenous communities.
