At UOW we are currently looking at new options to deliver course material to students at our various satellite campuses within the area of management. Currently we are using video streaming with "talking head" style delivery. I would be very interested to see if you have had any feedback or information to share on the subject.

TAFE Queensland Videolinq is hosting streaming video recorded in the stonemasonry training workshop, with slides and narration added. The example linked at the left (31-07-08) is one of eight streams produced as a pilot for further development. Using Videolinq network streaming technology to tell a digital story from the trade skills workshop floor is a departure from the 'talking head' style of delivery.

Hello All, I would like to get your opinions on new formats that are popping up...the ezine or online magazine. I thought that this was a particularly good example as it is targeted towards young people who are interested in trades and skills careers with the trades and skills ambit being very wide to include digital artists to fashion designers http://www.skillsone.com.au/Ezine/1/

Thanks so much Carole that is great. I've starting doing quick things like getting kindys to come up to the laptop one at a time and tell a story into the microphone. Also thanks for the link to Uskoob it looks great. Also Gemma I agree, I think the i-pod is a great way to connect kids to digital media relatively cheaply. I wonder why they aren't recognised as an important tool in student access to technology.

i-pods, podcasting, i-tunes are apart of every shoolbag just like pencils and pens...if we want to reach kids then everyone needs to get hold of this trend that is only going to get stronger. I've been showcassing videos from SkillsOne to those who are looking into their future careers. Theses videos are free and available for download on i-tunes. For those of you who haven't come across SkillsOne- it is a television and website that is dedicated to profiling the success stories and capturing the passion of tradesmen and women in Australia. You can see videos here www.skillsone.com.au. Hope this is helpful. Gemma

Concetta, I wanted to answer your query too by suggesting that young students can help create an eportfolio artefact by using simple voice recording tools and movie maker. I recently interviewed my 5 year old granddaughter who wanted to tell me about her favourite things and what she like best about school - her first year. Pretty soon, she was telling me. "Nanna I think we need to edit that bit out - can I do it?" We were using good old Audacity and the built in microphone on my laptop. Next I gave her my digital camera to take some pictures of her school art work and showed her how to crop these once we had them in the laptop. Now we have the ingredients for a digital story - it will be her first eportfolio artefact.

Digital storytelling is taking off in new directions with software available that enables the storyteller to create a short movie in less than an hour. I was delighted to find an updated version of Movie Maker already included in the suite of programs installed in my new laptop. I was downloading some images from my digital camera and focussing on editing them when I noticed that it asked me if I wanted to make a movie from this image. Imagine my surprise when Movie Maker popped up when I clicked yes. It comes with a new set of transitions and a really streamlined interface. Its fantastic! Its Windows Movie Maker version 6.0 - check it out!
