Community Information Australia Network (CIAN), an ALIA subgroup that aims to promote professional development activities for community information workers; inform and educate by promoting best practice in community information; provide a forum for discussion relating to the skills and functions of community information provision and support standards of operations which will ensure the best possible service to the community. CIAN is national in focus, but with a South Australian meeting base, holding quarterly forums that are open to all.

This paper, presented at the 2007 Australian School Library Association conference, reviews the Australian literature on professional learning portfolios and considers how educators might use online social networking tools to create personal learning environments and share their passion for learning within a global community of practice. It outlines the proof of concept work in the area of personal learning environments being undertaken by Education Network Australia and suggests that professional associations encourage educators to join online communities in order to publish, share and reflect on their learning journey.
The primary purpose of this study is to profile the status of e-learning in small business in Australia and identify the barriers to effective implementation. Recommendations include: providing quick access points to e-learning resources for business; continuing engagement with professional and industry associations; connecting with business networks, and franchise groups; focusing on construction and manufacturing sectors; and promoting relationships between the training sector and small business.
