I played in the wikispaces site and decided I had enough information
to have a go at using this in my classroom. I created a private
site and added my students as members -the bulk upload of
id/email/password combinations made things easy.
The group I was using was a year 10 Information Technology class.
The students were excited by the new experience, even though one of
them was at pains to let me know that he knew
far more about wikis than I did even if he admitted he didn't

I was quite excited to 'have a go' at making a wiki
following the u-tube video showing how easy and helpful it is for
communicating in a group situation via the internet.
With only 2 weeks until the Yr 12 exams, one of
which is a home study week, I decided to make one just for my
Biology class. I used wikispaces for teachers and the step-by-step
guide was so easy to follow. Before I knew it I had made a wiki! To
be corny I should say that my Wiki was very wiki! [..]

It's been a while since my last post and it is time to address and
finally evaluate how my wiki has fared up.
Firstly, I have to say that I may reserve my final judgement on my
wiki until after the VCE Revolutions exam on Thursday, where I hope to
chat with the students informally and get their opinions on the
Wiki-experiment. However,I have to say that preliminary results
thus far have been somewhat disappointing.
It is not a case of not being unsatisfied with my wiki. I'm quite

My project is finally starting to take shape. I've set the students
the task of collaboratively creating a summary/revision tool for their
upcoming Humanities exam, and we're commencing this week. I was
inspired by the teacher in the earlier readings who had such success
with a similar project, and this also reflects a current need for my
student group. And, as has been said by many people before, technology
should be the best answer to a real need, not just gadgets tacked on
to cr[..]

Wikispaces Blog » Blog Archive » Tips and Tricks: Create Templates for Your Wiki Pages
(Pru Mitchell bookmarked this item)
Looking to set up a project for each student in your class and you would like each student to follow a similar format as they present their research? Instead of formatting pages for each person or occasion, you can save time by using wikispaces page template tool.

Tonight we're presenting our action research plan to the whole staff. We
won't have much time, but it will give us a chance to show staff our
Wiki, which we are hoping they will join and use as a tool to
collaborate on curriculum planning for next year. I'm planning to show
them the commoncraft Wikis in Plain English first for those
who aren't familiar with them and then give a quick overview of what
we've already added and how we'd like them to participate.

We have a question!
How can we use a wiki to develop an understanding
of Wikis and their potential in the classroom?
The main goal of our
project (I am working with another teacher from our school, Sara)
is to introduce our staff to wikis and to discover all the
wonderful ways we can use them to better our teaching.
Luckily for us, we
actually have an area for staff to[..]

So my first attempt at a blog obviously hasn't
worked...asIdid post oneabout a week

My focus question a week agowas how can I engage students in
maths through the use of wikis? Sinceour pd last weekI
have decided to broaden it to both literacy and numeracy. One
ideaI have had since beginning this project was to get students
recording their reading on audacity and putting it ona wiki for
others to commenton, focusing on their fluency an[..]

Greeting fellow wiki-users,
I have more or less uploaded all of the information required for my
blog. Although I will be updating it and tidying up some editing
aspects of the page. I may have made an error selecting wikispaces.com
rather than wikispaces.com.au, but I'm committed to my location right
now and got the ball rolling, so I will stick with my choice.
The wikispace itself consists of a total of nine pages (including the
home page). I have divided the lecture notes of the[..]

I have been using a class wiki for one term now with wikispaces but spend the Christmas holidays building it and having it unblocked through the 'Internet Filtering' link on the portal. I did receive a notification stating all requirements of an educational wiki but mine met all the criteria and was unblocked readily. In fact, I suggest applying for more than one and requesting them to be unblocked at the same time. This has been valuable as now I am finishing a wiki for the school community and already have one to go. In relation to content and embedding from other sites, this is a different matter. Lots of trial and error and checking the site URL through DET Internet Filtering and logging on as a student at school to see if that content comes up blocked. I suggest a couple of practice pages for testing or even a test wiki. From my experience, Google Docs is blocked but Slideshare is not. Go Figure??? Hope you've got a lot of time......but it's great fun!

Just curious if anyone has experience of using wikis with students within NSW DET portal. Current filters seem to block them all and requests to unblock so far have met with lengthy delays and frustrations at school. Students are using them at home with no problems, but a bit self defeating.

WetPaint [see link] is a very good classroom wiki service. It seems to be set up for education, and if used in a school or other education facility, you can request that the ads be turned off. Just as editme's forte is web publishing, and media wiki's is very powerful text-focused collaboration, WetPaint's feature is collaboration. The display looks a bit crowded, but is very cool when a bunch of people are contributing to a page and their images appear on the left. It has good security and privacy controls.

Yes, Tom you have a good point, that wikis and other tools are evolving in diverging and overlapping ways. The term wiki (quick in Hawaiian) is holding up well as a good choice.

Wikis are getting beyond their original vision of creating content quickly with lighweight formatting. Group based Access Control is an unusual feature and might [helpfully] restrict the number of choices.
Also - could you identify separate out the need for web hosting vs the need of a hosted wiki service. Consider Google docs as a non-wiki option here...

mediawiki is the one which is used by wikipedia and wikia. The wikimedia commons has CC or free images and files which can be reused. The communities using these wikis have a lot of experience in online collaboration if youre looking to integrate the tool choice with good support for communities of practice.

I agree that no-one can possibly know all the wikis available out there. Using WikiMatrix.org's choice wizard for what I thought schools, professional associations would find most useful I got the fully response: "You want a hosted offer with WYSIWYG editing and a page history using your own domain and which allows your own corporate branding.
The following 13 Wikis match your criteria:
BrainKeeper, CentralDesktop, ClearWiki, Metadot Wiki, Netcipia, PBwiki, SamePage, ScribbleWiki, SeedWiki, Socialtext, StikiPad, Wetpaint and Wikispaces

some wiki tools are just wikis. For example, the Moodle wiki is still a very "bare" wiki.
However other wikis like editme.com are really a wiki/blog combination, almost providing the same features as a full blown website.
Many teachers use Wiki Spaces for its ease of use, and in Higher ed lots of people use PBWiki
