You have high expectations looking for processes that will work across sites. Sites vary in their micro culture and best practice comes when people at any one site look at what others are doing and research, then gently improve their own learning and practice, checking what works or does not in that context. Sharing success and failures is a good place to start.
I would not underestimate the power of positive play when channelled well. It does need some structure and direction but also needs boy input and boy appropriate expectations. I certainly made the error at times of unconsciously expecting an almost adult work ethic, ability to organise and to focus as well as some creativity and an ability to work with others, all at the same time. I became better at explaining that range of expectations, negotiating them a little, setting boy appropriate expectations and holding them to those agreements and expectations quietly but firmly. Thus respect is built and for boys that is important.
Hi Colin. I also used to teach Design and Technology and Visual Arts. Prior to teaching I was a Goldsmith. You ave working ii an area where it is easier to positively engage boys. The trick is to have them love what they do, even the 'paperwork'. I would be happy to stay in touch.
