2009 Random House, translated by Marlaine Delargy, 438 pages, ISBN 978-0-385-34222-3 THE DARKEST ROOM is set on the island of Oland of the east coast of Sweden. On the eastern side of Oland are the twin lighthouses of Eel Point, one giving off a red light at night, the other a white light that rarely seems to work. Near the lighthouses just inland is the manor house built 150 years ago from the timbers of shipwrecks. Katrine and Joakim Westin have bought the manor house and are in the [..]
Aussie Author Challenge This one is being run by Book Lover Book Reviews . I've signed up for the FAIR DINKUM challenge which requires me to read 8 titles by at least 5 different Aussie authors. In 2009 I read 20 books by Aussie authors so I should be able to do this easily, although of course mine will have that extra little challenge of being all crime fiction titles. TRUTH, Peter Temple BLOOD BORN, Kathryn Fox CONSEQUENCES OF SIN, Clare Langley-Hawthorne (some might [..]

I originally wrote this review in 2006 and it was published elsewhere. I have re-vamped it as part of the Crime Fiction Alphabet although you may detect a slightly predictive tone towards the end. My copy was published by Random House, Australia, 2006 Joe Middleton knows that the Christchurch Carver did not commit all of the murders attributed to him. Primarily because Joe is the Carver and a murder has been listed that he did not commit. From his vantage point of working in the polic[..]

The Alphabet in Crime Fiction - a Community Meme. Here are the rules Each week you have to write a blog post about crime fiction related to the letter of the week. Your post MUST be related to either the first letter of a book's title, the first letter of an author's first name, or the first letter of the author's surname. So you see you have lots of choice. You could write a review, or a bio of an author, so long as it fits the rules somehow. Please check each Monday for t[..]

If you are a reader of my blog you will know that I bought a 6" Kindle towards the end of last year. Since then I've read 6 books on the Kindle which I suppose is not so many, but I am really looking forward to taking it with me when I have some long plane journeys at the end of February. There's been quite a bit written this week about the release of promotional stuff about the Apple iPod which I think is designed to rival the Kindle DX released on January 19. And then today there ha[..]
I've been running a poll for the last 2 weeks and as you can see most respondents have plumped for 1 to 2 books a week. In fact some of those who took part in the poll left comments to that effect in the post that accompanied the poll . I thought I might aim for about 110, based on averages of previous years. If what I have managed to read so far this year, 12, is any indication, then I might get to many more than that. I guess the next question is how you actually choose the books: Cr[..]
The Alphabet in Crime Fiction - a Community Meme. The letter for the week beginning 25 January was the Letter O 11 wonderful contributors again this week, and again a great range of terrific titles, including one not to read! Tomorrow, 1 February, we will be featuring the letter P and what possibilities there are! And then we have 10 more letters with some really challenging ones like Q, X, and Z to contemplate If you read and write about crime fiction, we'd love to have your cont[..]

Kerrie Smiths Whiteboard

Hi Kerrie, I've just joined me.edu.au because I've recently set up a group called Multilingual Australia which hopes to improve government funding and support for languages education in all sectors of the community including schools, pre-schools, adult education and so on. I was wondering whether you were at all interested in a network like that. It would be great to hear your thoughts on such a group and whether you would like to support us. Best regards, Liz

Kerrie, Could I suggest that if anyone has another blog at another domain, like yourself, that they put a bookmark on their me page which points to it? It would be a pity not to let newbies know that most of your blogging is dome elsewhere. Especially as its worth reading.

Hi Kerrie I just commented on your Mysteries in Paradise blog. I tried to enter the url of my me.edu.au blog but it wouldn't accept it because of the format of the addresss. I guess it's just something we will have to live with?

Thanks Kerrie. I know what part of the issue is with the edna.au site. It's lacking colour and therefore looks overly official and intimidating.

Kerrie, you sent out an email reminding about subscribing to conversations. Where is an email subscription link and RSS link on the IB page? That should be obvious for all so that they can continue with a conversation. Thanks.
